Breast lift or mastopexy is a surgical procedure designed to raise and reshape the breasts by eliminating excess skin and fat and tighten the area, which results in a firmer, more uplifted, fuller and more youthful contour. Age, pregnancy, breast-feeding, weight loss and other factors can cause the breasts to sag. Loss of skin elasticity, gravity and other factors can ultimately affect the shape and firmness of the breasts. During mastopexy excess skin and fat are removed, then the breast is raised and lifted. It also involves repositioning of the nipples and areolas. This procedure is not permanent, and cannot permanently delay the effects that cause the breasts to sag. However, undergoing a mastopexy can help a woman achieve a more youthful breast contour.
There are many reasons why women choose to undergo a mastopexy. Some women have adequate size breasts, but they are not well positioned. Then there are those who lack substance or firmness in their breasts. A mastopexy can even help women correct a condition where one breast is firm and well positioned, while the other is not. There are other conditions that qualify for wanting a breast lift, however, those still thinking about pregnancy should consider waiting before undergoing this procedure. Breast lift surgery can be performed alone, or in conjunction with breast augmentation to add more volume to the breast.
If you are considering a breast lift, then please consult with Dr. Wim Danau to become well informed about the procedure.
Dr. Wim Danau begins the breast lift procedure by making an incision around the areola, which is the dark-pigmented area surrounding the nipple. He continues incision down under the crease of the breast and removes excess skin. He then tightens the skin of the breast area, reshapes the breasts, and relocates the nipples to a higher position. The entire breast lift procedure typically takes less than two hours to complete and is usually performed on an outpatient basis. General anesthesia is generally used during mastopexy surgery.
Most of our breast lift patients will experience some bruising and swelling for two to three weeks after breast lift surgery. These side effects should fade as the breasts continue to heal. Any residual pain and discomfort can be reduced with medication. As with any surgical procedure, there will be some scarring from the operation. However, Dr. Wim Danau will make every effort to make scarring as minimal as possible. Breast lift scars typically fade to thin white lines over a period of months. Patients can usually resume normal daily activities about a week after surgery, although strenuous activities in the first few weeks of recovery should be avoided because they can put pressure on the breasts and slow the healing process.
As with any surgical procedure, there are risks involved with breast lift surgery. These include:
